2015 – KIA TRAILSTER CONCEPT

– The Trailster Concept presented at the Chicago Show, serves as a test for a Soul with electric integral traction system

Kia unveiled a prototype manufactured in the Chicago Salon based on Soul, the Trailster Concept. The study aims to anticipate a Soul with an integral electric traction system. Visually different by the use of the Polar Snowdrift pearl color, with contrasting brass terrain in metallic roof and body protections, the version stands out by the e-AWD, which mixes the attributes of a thermal engine 1.6 turbo to four-cylinder gasoline producing 188 hp and 251 Nm of torque – channeled power to the front axle through a six-speed automatic transmission – and a rear electric motor with 36 hp and 135 Nm, powered by a polymer lithium-ion battery. The electric motor operates with low load on the throttle up to 5 km. At constant speeds, the electric block has the function of assisting the combustion engine. Off-road, the electric motor comes into action when there are traction losses, whenever the software detects slippage. The Kia also says that the auxiliary block acts as a generator to recover kinetic energy and charge the battery during braking or when the car is packed. The Trailster is still 25-30% more economical in the city and 5-10% down the road compared to the current Soul. The concept features lower body protections in aluminum, retractable roof in waterproof fabric and 19-inch wheels (as measured 245/45/19) with Pirelli Winter Carving snow tires. The Trailster uses LED headlights, with projectors inspired by the K900 concept, as well as prominent fog lights. The taillights, embedded in a redesigned structure, are also LED. Inwardly, it changes little in relation to conventional Soul. Only a thicker gearbox handle, integral drive controls and a red ignition button appear, as well as brown leather seats and carpets with aluminum inserts.
